Russians hold crossovers in high esteem, but often they are "typically urban dwellers" (who are not ready for forays even on "little off-road") ... A compromise in this situation has been offered by the Subaru brand for more than 20 years - in the form of an off-road wagon under the name "Outback", which combines the best qualities of SUVs and "just station wagons" ...

The fifth generation of the car celebrated its world premiere in April 2014 at the stands of the International New York Auto Show, and its European premiere took place in March 2015 at the car show in Geneva (after which it went on sale).

Compared to its predecessor, the five-door "prettier" externally and internally, slightly enlarged in size, received modernized equipment and "armed" with new options, but at the same time retained all its "key traditions".

In April 2017 (at a motor show in New York), a restyled car appeared before the general public, which reached the Russian market only after almost a year.

As part of the update, the station wagon freshened up a little externally (redesigned bumpers, radiator grille, headlights and mirrors), tried on a redesigned interior with a new media center, acquired enhanced noise insulation and replenished its functionality with new security systems.
The "Japanese" also did not do without technical metamorphoses - they adjusted the settings of the brake pedal, variator and electric power steering, and also recalibrated the suspension for the sake of comfort.

Compared to its predecessor, the 5th generation Outback began to look more solid and expressive, although it retained its recognizable contours and outlines.

From the "station wagon-crossover" emanates confidence and prestigious status - which is emphasized by a large hexagonal radiator grille in a chrome "robe" and aggressive optics with LED filling (albeit only for running lights and low beam).

Smooth lines prevailing in the design of the body - form a harmonious and correct silhouette. "Muscular" wheel arches (accommodating disks measuring 17-18 inches), long overhangs and the shape of the glass, pointed closer to the rear, add solidity to the car's appearance.

Despite its weight and relief, the stern looks stylish and interesting, and the merit of this is the stylish lights with LED "stuffing" and a large tailgate flap.

The Japanese all-terrain wagon "stands out" in the European "D-class": 4820 mm in length, 1840 mm in width and 1675 mm in height, and the wheelbase has 2745 mm of the total length at its disposal.

In the stowed state, the ground clearance (clearance) of the car has a completely "off-road" 213 mm.

The inner world of the 5th generation Subaru Outback can be characterized by the following words: nice, simple and without frills, but ergonomic, high quality and comfortable.

The driver's main toolkit is a stylish three-spoke multifunction steering wheel and an informative instrument cluster with two "deep" wells and a color display between them, which can be lit in one of nine colors to choose from.

The key position on the center console is provided by a color touchscreen "tablet" of the multimedia complex with a diagonal of 6.5 or 8 inches, depending on the configuration. Slightly below is an ergonomic air conditioning unit, which is controlled by neat buttons and regulators.

The interior design as a whole "pleases the eye", but it clearly does not reach the "premium segment" (which marketers - representatives of the brand are constantly talking about). But what the "fifth Outback" really captivates with is the quality of the materials used - soft (and pleasant in all respects) plastics, good-quality leather on armchairs and doors, as well as textured plastics (imitating aluminum or wood).

The "off-road" station wagon from the Land of the Rising Sun is equipped with cool front seats - providing a reliable body fixation due to the developed support on the sides. Wide adjustment ranges allow you to choose the optimal placement for riders of almost any body size.

On the second row of the Outback there is a comfortable sofa with a backrest adjustable in angle, individual air deflectors, two-level heating and an armrest in the center, which can easily accommodate three adults ... The only drawback here is a high transmission tunnel that interferes with the average passenger.

The trunk of the fifth generation Subaru Outback is distinguished by a high level of practicality: the correct shape, high roominess and a relatively low loading height. In the stowed state, its volume is 527 liters, the back of the "gallery" folds in asymmetrical parts into a flat floor, increasing the space reserve up to 1801 liters. In the "underground" - an almost complete "spare wheel" with a yellow disc, the diameter of which is 17 inches.

On the Russian market, an all-terrain wagon is offered with two gasoline power plants, "protruding" together with an all-wheel drive transmission and a Lineartronic wedge-chain variator, which is capable of switching to a "step" mode during dynamic movement and imitating the operation of a classic 6-band "automatic".

  • Under the hood of the Subaru Outback in the basic version, a 2.5-liter "aspirated" with four opposed cylinders is installed, equipped with a distributed fuel injection, a 16-valve timing chain drive and an AVCS phase change system. Peak engine output is 175 horsepower generated at 5800 rpm and 235 Nm of torque delivered to the wheels at 4000 rpm.
    Not the most impressive performance of the engine provides the car with corresponding readings of dynamics and speed: 10.2 seconds takes acceleration from standstill to 100 km / h, and 198 km / h is the peak value of the maximum speed. In mixed driving mode, this Outback requires an average of 7.7 liters of fuel, of which 10 liters goes to the urban cycle, and 6.3 liters - on the suburban highway.

  • More productive versions of the station wagon are equipped with a 3.6-liter atmospheric horizontally opposed "six" with multi-point gasoline and a 24-valve DOHC timing chain with a chain drive, producing 260 "mares" at 6000 rpm and 350 Nm of ultimate thrust at 4400 rpm / minute.
    Such "Outback" is much faster: the car continues to accelerate until reaching the mark of 235 km / h, and spends only 7.6 seconds on the starting "jerk" to the first "hundred". Passport "appetite" does not exceed 9.9 liters of fuel per 100 km of track in a combined cycle (14.2 liters is spent in the city, and 7.5 liters outside of it).

By default, the "fifth" Subaru Outback is equipped with the "family" all-wheel drive system "SI-Drive", which divides the moment between the front and rear wheels in a ratio of 60:40. However, this proportion, depending on the driving conditions, is capable of reaching 50:50 - since the multi-plate MP-T clutch is responsible for the selection of potential to the rear wheels, which, if necessary, can either open or completely lock.

At the heart of the 5th "Outback" is a platform from the sixth generation Subaru Legacy with spring suspensions on both axles - McPherson struts in front and double wishbones at the rear, in each case there are anti-roll bars. Due to the use of high-strength steels and aluminum in the structure, the rigidity of the body has increased by 67% in comparison with its predecessor.

An electromechanical amplifier is implanted in the steering mechanism. All four wheels sport ventilated disc brakes and are fitted by default with four-channel ABS with EBD, emergency brake assist and BOS8 brake priority technology.

On the Russian market, the 2018 Subaru Outback is offered in four equipment options - "Standard", "Elegance", "Premium" and "Premium ES".

  • A base car with a 2.5-liter engine costs from 2,399,000 rubles, and its functionality combines: seven airbags, LED headlights, dual-zone climate control, heated front and rear seats, leather interior trim, a multimedia complex with an 8-inch screen, a camera rear view, keyless entry, ABS, ESP, cruise control, 17-inch alloy wheels, ERA-GLONASS system, electric sunroof and some other equipment.

  • The "top" modification with a "four" under the hood is sold at a price of 2,739,900 rubles, and with a six-cylinder engine - from 3,299,900 rubles. Among its features are: electric front seats, light and rain sensors, luggage door servo, 18-inch light-alloy rollers, heated steering wheel, blind spot monitoring and the EyeSight complex, which includes adaptive cruise control, driver fatigue assessment , automatic braking system, lane keeping assist technology, etc.
