The first incarnation of the compact sedan Chevrolet Cobalt, which replaced the Cavalier and Prizm models, made its official debut in the fall of 2004 at an international show in Los Angeles, and after a short time went on sale in the North American market. In 2007, the car was modernized - the interior was refreshed, new equipment was added and the engines were modified. Serial production of the four-door continued until 2010, after which it was replaced by a global family called Cruze.

There are no extraordinary or memorable design solutions in the exterior of the "first" Chevrolet Cobalt, but at the same time the car looks nice and finished: the car body with the correct three-volume outlines demonstrates pleasant-looking lighting technology, neat bumpers and expressive sidewalls with clearly defined wheel arches. In city traffic, the exterior of the four-door will definitely not attract attention, however, it will not cause rejection either.

With its dimensions, the Cobalt sedan of the original generation meets the standards of the C-class: its length is 4584 mm, of which 2624 mm falls on the gap between the wheelsets, the width and height fit into 1725 mm and 1450 mm, respectively, and the ground clearance is 136 mm. In the "stowed" form, the car weighs from 1265 to 1320 kg, depending on the version.

The interior of the "first" Chevrolet Cobalt is designed in a calm and laconic style - a simple but very informative instrument cluster with dials, a convenient multifunctional steering wheel and a discreet center console, which is occupied by a "two-din" radio, three air conditioning controls and several additional buttons. There are no obvious ergonomic mistakes inside the four-door, and the materials used are inexpensive, but mostly of acceptable quality.

The original Cobalt has five seats, with ample space allocated on both rows of seats. The front riders are assigned to well-arranged seats (although they cannot boast of pronounced sidewalls), and the rear ones - a full-fledged sofa, albeit with a somewhat flat profile.

The luggage compartment of the Chevrolet Cobalt is 394 liters as standard, and the folding second row of seats allows you to transport long items. "Hold" has far from the most thought-out configuration (the wheel arches protrude noticeably inward, and the hinges "eat up" part of the space), but its underground niche houses a full-fledged spare wheel and the necessary tools.

Specifications. For the American sedan of the first generation, a single gasoline unit was offered - a four-cylinder "aspirated" Ecotec L61 with a volume of 2.2 liters (2198 cubic centimeters) with a block and head made of aluminum, in-line layout, distributed fuel supply and a 16-valve DOHC timing structure. Initially, the engine generated 145 horsepower at 5600 rpm and 210 Nm of torque at 4000 rpm, but by the end of the "life cycle" its performance was 155 "mares" and 203 Nm at identical rpm.
A 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic transmission was responsible for supplying power to the wheels of the front axle.

The passport "appetite" for a car varies from 8 to 8.4 liters, depending on the modification for a "hundred" way in the combined mode.

The first incarnation of Cobalt extends over the front-wheel-drive Delta architecture and features a steel body and a transversely mounted powertrain. On the front axle, the three-box uses an independent chassis with classic MacPherson struts, and on the rear axle, a semi-independent structure with an elastic beam (anti-roll bars and coil springs are present "in a circle").
The car boasts a rack and pinion steering system, which is complemented by a hydraulic booster. Braking on the sedan is controlled by ventilated "pancakes" at the front and conventional "drums" at the rear, which work in conjunction with ABS.

Equipment and prices. In the Russian open spaces, the "first" Chevrolet Cobalt is practically not common, but in the USA it is found very often, and at an affordable cost - from $ 2,000 in 2016 (~ 130 thousand rubles at the current exchange rate).
Already in the basic version, the car boasts four airbags, air conditioning, a radio tape recorder with a CD-receiver, ABS, fog lights, an on-board computer, power windows for all doors, 15-inch wheels, a traction control system and some other equipment. On the "top" cars there are additionally leather trim "suites", heated front seats, an audio system with an MP-player and other "usefulness".
