The international premiere of the five-door, which became the serial embodiment of the Volkswagen Sport Coupe GTE concept presented in the spring of 2015, took place on March 6, 2017 at the Geneva show of the auto industry, but Arteon only reached Russia by the summer of 2020.

Unlike its predecessor, the car turned into an "independent combat unit" and tried on the technical "stuffing" from the Passat B8, but at the same time received a higher status than the "original model".

The exterior of the Volkswagen Arteon combines solidity and a sporty image, and its body is characterized by a squat look and athletic shape. But if in general the exterior of the car is designed in the current style of the brand, then “from the face” it is unique: the daring front end is crowned with a monumental “shield” of the radiator grille, a “humped” hood that goes into the sidewalls, and LED headlights split in two.

And in profile, the fastback looks powerful and decisive, and its solidity is given by the "muscular" shoulder line, the sloping roof, "flowing" into the "outgrowth" of the trunk, and the embossed rear fenders. The cool look is successfully completed by a strong rear, eye-catching sophisticated lanterns and a massive bumper with wide trapezoidal exhaust pipes.

"Arteon" is a representative of the business class according to the European classification (aka the "E" segment) with the corresponding external dimensions: its length extends to 4862 mm, the width fits into 1871 mm, and the height does not exceed 1427 mm. The front and rear axles of the "German" are separated by a distance of 2841 mm. The five-door is in contact with the roadway by means of wheels measuring from 17 to 20 inches.

Interior

Inside the Volkswagen Arteon - no surprises: it is made in the same vein as the eighth generation Passat. The interior of the fastback looks stylish and presentable, and horizontal "strings" stretched along the entire length of the dashboard add a touch of chic to it. A "drawn" instrument cluster with a 12-inch screen, an expressive multifunctional steering wheel and a strict center console, on which an analog clock flaunts, a 9.2-inch monitor of a multimedia complex and an exemplary "microclimate" block - the decoration is not only good-looking (although, in " base "everything is simpler), but also flawlessly organized.

Well, the quality of finishing materials and workmanship is to the envy of many competitors.

The Arteon's cabin has five full-fledged seats. But here it is worth considering that, despite the solid supply of free space in the second row and the thoughtful proportions of the sofa, only two passengers will be most comfortable in the back because of the high floor tunnel. Well, the front seats of the "German" are a competent profile, developed lateral support and a large number of electrical adjustments.

The volume of the trunk in the "stowed" form of the premium fastback is an impressive 563 liters. The backs of the rear sofa fold down flush with the floor in a 40:20:40 ratio, thereby increasing the hold to 1557 liters.

Specifications

A wide range of four-cylinder power units is announced for Volkswagen Arteon:

  • The initial gasoline engine is a 1.5-liter "four" TSI Evo, working on the Miller cycle and equipped with a variable geometry turbocharger, direct injection, phase shifters at the inlet and outlet and 16 valves, which develops 150 "mares" at 5000-6000 rpm minute and 200 Nm of maximum torque at 1300-4000 rpm.
  • More powerful versions are equipped with a 2.0-liter TSI engine with adjustable valve timing, turbocharging, direct power supply and 16-valve timing, offered in two boost options:
    • 190 horsepower at 4200-6000 rpm and 320 Nm of generated potential at 1450-4200 rpm;
    • or 280 "horses" at 5600-6500 rpm and 350 Nm of available thrust at 1700-5600 rpm.
  • A 2.0 TDI diesel unit with a 16-valve timing structure, Common Rail battery injection and turbochargers is also available for the car, which is provided in three versions:
    • 150 "horses" at 3500-4000 rpm and 340 Nm of torque at 1750 rpm;
    • 190 "stallions" at 3500-4000 rpm and 400 Nm of peak output at 1900-330 rpm;
    • or 240 "heads" at 4000 rpm and 500 Nm at 1750-2500 rpm.

All versions are equipped with a 7-speed "robot" DSG with two clutches, and the "junior" versions are also equipped with a 6-speed "mechanics".

The 4Motion all-wheel drive system with a Haldex multi-plate clutch in the rear wheel drive is by default coupled with motors with a capacity of over 200 "horses", and for an extra charge - with a 190-horsepower diesel engine, the rest of the cars have front axle drive wheels.

Design features

At the heart of "Arteon" is a modular "bogie" MQB with a transverse arrangement of the power plant and a wide use of high-strength steels in the body structure. "In a circle" the car is equipped with independent suspensions: MacPherson struts are used at the front, and a four-link system at the rear. Electronically controlled DCC dampers are available as an option.

The fastback steering complex is represented by a rack and pinion mechanism with a variable tooth pitch and an electric power steering with variable characteristics. All wheels of the five-door are equipped with disc brakes (ventilated on the front axle) with a huge number of advanced "bells and whistles".

Options and prices

In the Russian market, the 2020 Volkswagen Arteon can only be purchased with a 190-horsepower TSI turbo four, a 7-band "robot" and front-wheel drive, but in two trim levels - R-Line and R-Line Premium. It is worth noting that later we should have an all-wheel drive modification with a 280 hp gasoline engine.

  • The cost of a five-door in the R-Line version starts at 2,639,000 rubles, for which you get: six airbags, a media center with an 8-inch screen, a rear-view camera, a virtual instrument cluster, all-LED optics, 18-inch alloy wheels, a three-zone climate -control, lane-keeping system, heated all seats, electric front seats, combined trim, keyless entry and engine start, ABS, ESP and other equipment.
  • For the "premium" option, dealers are asking for at least 2,999,000 rubles, and its privileges are: adaptive headlights with a washer, an infotainment complex with a 9.2-inch touchscreen, all-round cameras, a panoramic roof, 19-inch wheels, adaptive cruise control and other "bells and whistles".

It is noteworthy that both configurations are fixed, that is, there are no additional options for them.
